What jet-lag?

Shhh!!

Anyway, I put up my pictures from the trip. On Flick'r bien sur.

A brief wrap up: I got to Pollo Loco, In-N-Out Burger, Del Taco, Fatburger, and Maui Tacos. I nixed Jack N the Box and Carl's Jr based on time and appeal*. I was not disappointed by any of these experiences one bit.

What does a girl do on her last night in Palm Springs by herself? Well, I don't know what a typical girl would do, but I got a haircut at Aveda on Palm Canyon (a no-tipping salon! who knew?). Stylist Nicole recommended I check out the Thursday night street fair, so that's what I did (post-Fatburger, of course).

I gave my mother the audio tour as I walked down the street. Once I hung up, I looked at art, and produce, and jewelry, and it was all terrific, but not all that interesting by myself. Towards the end of the street, when I really thought my night was getting dull, I ran into a man selling hummus and speaking Hebrew. I can't explain what drew me to his table, but one thing led to another, and soon I was helping my new Lebanese friend Saladdin sell hummus.

I don't know what a typical night brings in the way of hummus sales, but Saladdin said I really helped. Go figure. If this puppet thing doesn't work out... Anyway, that really improved my night, oddly enough.

After several hours of hummus-slinging we went to the Hog's Head for a drink, and then I went home.

This morning, I checked out of the resort, returned the rental car, and everything was going smoothly until I tried to take my excellent new gadget through security. Whoops, I guess a plastic box full of blades still isn't OK in your carry-on luggage. Those TSA people are SO SENSITIVE!! But actually, they were very nice, and fairly accommodating, and everything worked out for the best. Well, until I walked through the metal detector with my hat on. D'oh. And even that wasn't a big deal. Until I picked up my backpack and the zipper failed and the little Lee oranges I bought rolled all over the place. Joy!!

But my flight left on time, and I made my connection, and I had plenty of time to order a Lahaina burrito "wet" (totally unnecessary, by the way) and call a few people from the airport and not pay $6.95 for one-time wireless access. There was some sort of engine trouble with the plane, but they took care of it on the ground (file that under something I'd prefer they hadn't ever brought up) and we left maybe 10 minutes late. And that's nothing compared to awful, awful America West.

Other things about the trip: It's darn near impossible to find vegetarian friendly food in Palm Springs, I continue to be in love with every aerial tram I take, and I did not see and do not necessarily believe in the big-horn sheep. Don't go to the outlets, it's only six stores. Um... charging stuff to your room is awesome. I definitely want a pool, only I definitely want to live in the city. How to reconcile these desires?

There's an awful lot of desert nothingness between California and Minnesota. And there's an awful lot of farm nothingness and dark night between Minnesota and New York. And I let out an audible sigh of relief when I saw the lights of New York. I am so very glad to be back here each and every time I come back. I shouldn't say that out loud, but it's true. I could see stars above the plane and New York below. It was magical.

Enough of that though. I have a pink cowboy hat and 5 lbs of little Lee oranges and a very broken backpack and a new haircut and a tan. Howdy, y'all!

*somehow I forgot that Carl's Jr was responsible for the Paris Hilton/carwash/burger ad. Now I'm really glad I didn't go.
